UFCW to represent workers at SQDC location in Mirabel

This is the third SQDC store where employees have joined the UFCW union, two other unions are also seeking to represent some SQDC workers

The United Food and Commercial Workers union has been accredited to represent workers at a third Société québécoise du cannabis store, this time in Mirabel.

A labour relations officer of the Tribunal administratif du travail rendered a decision to that effect on Tuesday.

The UFCW, which is affiliated with the FTQ, already represents workers at the SQDC stores in Rimouski and Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie.

Negotiations have already begun between the SQDC and workers at the Rosemont location, which motivated the workers at the Mirabel store to choose the UFCW, according to the new union members.

“The negotiation process has already begun and the situation is evolving rapidly at the Rosemont branch. The members of the bargaining committee have already been chosen and two meetings with the employer have already taken place,” said Antonio Filato, the president of the UFCW’s provincial council.

The UFCW has around 55,000 members in Quebec.

Several other unions are also seeking to organize SQDC workers.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees, which is also affiliated with the FTQ, has filed a request to unionize other SQDC workers on a regional basis, not by store. Those requests have not yet been heard.

The Syndicat des employés de magasins et de bureaux de la Société des alcools — which represents SAQ workers and is attached to the CSN — now represents SQDC workers at the Mascouche and Trois-Rivières stores.
