Train collision in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro injures 9

RIO DE JANEIRO — Two commuter trains have collided just north of downtown Rio de Janeiro, injuring nine people, including the train’s driver.

The train’s operators say one train smashed into the back of another at 6:50 a.m. local time (4:50 EST; 0950 GMT) Wednesday at the Sao Cristovao station.

The Rio fire department says eight injured people were brought to hospitals while the driver remains trapped in the wreckage, with about a dozen firefighters working on a rescue.

The train operator says the cause of the accident is under investigation.
