Provincial police are increasing highway patrols during the long weekend and urging motorists to pay more attention when driving.

Last year, the Sûreté du Québec recorded a total of 143 vehicle accidents involving injuries, including four fatal collisions. Eighty-three people were also arrested for impaired driving as a result of alcohol or drug consumption.

As a result, more SQ officers will be patrolling the highways and other roads until Monday, Victoria Day (also known as the Fête nationale des Patriotes in Quebec). Police expected increased traffic during the weekend.

The police will be monitoring motorists who speed, those who use handheld devices while behind the wheel and indulge in other reckless driving habits. Sgt. Stéphane Tremblay encouraged motorists to be courteous while driving and to respect signage while paying close attention to pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
