Eight investigators with the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) worked all night, through to just before 5 a.m. Sunday, at the scene of a police incident in Ste-Hélène-de-Bagot, in the Montérégie, in which a septuagenarian died Saturday.

The 77-year-old man was pronounced dead at a hospital just before 8 p.m. Saturday after being handcuffed and pepper-sprayed during his arrest by two officers with the Sûreté du Québec (SQ). They had been responding to a call made at approximately 6 p.m. Saturday reporting a domestic disturbance.

According to the BEI, the victim is believed to have previously suffered from respiratory problems.

The BEI, which is tasked with investigating “all cases where a person, other than a police officer on duty, dies, suffers a serious injury or is injured by a firearm used by a police officer during a police intervention or while detained by a police force,” has asked the forensic team of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) to assist in the investigation.
