Former B.C. hockey player charged in Kelowna toddler assault case

A 30-year-old Calgary man, who allegedly grabbed a toddler Sunday afternoon in a Kelowna park, has been charged with assault.

RCMP say shortly before 2:30 p.m., officers were called to Kerry Park for reports of an assault and a disturbance.

Witnesses told police that a man allegedly grabbed a child from his or her mother.

Harold Giffen Nyren has been charged with assault and willfully resisting arrest. He is in custody and scheduled to appear in court today.

Nyren is a professional hockey player who played junior for the Kamloops Blazers, Calgary Hitmen and Moose Jaw Warriors. In 2010-11, he played 15 games with the former Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League.

According to the Internet Hockey Database, Nyren played seven games this past season with Gothiques d’Amiens, a pro team in France.
