‘A beautiful soul: Teen dies a week after crash in Sydney’s south

A teenager described as «a beautiful soul» has died in hospital a week after the car she was a passenger in crashed into a bus in Sydney’s south-west, leaving four teens fighting for their lives.

Police have been told a Mazda travelling east on the M5 on Sunday, April 21, crashed into the rear of a stationary bus in the breakdown area on the side of the road.

Shalaney Velasquez, 19, died on Sunday from injuries sustained in the crash a week earlier.

Emergency services were called to the scene between Belmore Road and King Georges Road about 6.25pm, and were confronted with four seriously injured teens, two of whom had to be cut from the wreckage.

Ms Velasquez, 19, and Lisa Aitoa, 18, were in the back seat of the Mazda. Faith Patolo-Vitale, 19, was the driver of the car and her brother, Aliamanu Patolo-Vitale, 18, was the front seat passenger.
